Michael Dutcher Painting

Michael Dutcher was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1948. After attending Miami University in Ohio, he completed a ceramic apprenticeship in Taos, New Mexico, where he established a pottery studio and created functional and sculptural claywork. After returning to Pennsylvania in 1974, he continued working in clay, but a growing interest in larger scale sculptural design led him to complete an apprenticeship with a nationally-known metal sculptor, followed by study at Penland School of Crafts [NC] and Peters Valley Craft Center [NJ]. In 1983, the Dutcher Studio was established in West Chester, PA, where for the past 25 years Dutcher designed and created locally- and nationally-commissioned sculptural metalwork.

On a recent travel adventure in San Miguel d'Allende, Mexico, Dutcher suffered a stroke which has been transformational in all aspects of his life as he has embraced the freedom and expression of painting. Art is a creative activity that we can all be a part of to heal the spirit. Dutcher's paintings draw from familiar experiences, sensations, and remembrances of things long ago, and the relationship of energy in our bodies and in our physical world. Dutcher's images share with the viewer an "intelligence of the senses."
