Huang Xiang and William Rock The Century Mountain Project Chinese ink, acrylic on canvas - each is 3 x 5.5 feet

The Century Mountain Project -  The great Chinese poet and calligrapher Huang Xiang and noted American artist William Rock create a "visual dialogue across humanity."

The Century Mountain Project is an East / West collaboration of art between one of the
greatest poets of 20th century China, Huang Xiang, and American artist , William Rock.
Their collaborative art honors the greatness in us as human beings that has made itself
evident throughout the centuries in the form of  great creators, thinkers, discoverers,
leaders  -- essentially people who stood out like mountains throughout the centuries.

The ongoing collaborative artwork between Huang Xiang and William Rock  is a celebration of the vast potential in each one of us.  It has no cultural, gender or race distinctions.
After a subject is discussed and selected, William Rock will paint it and Huang Xiang will
add his poetry with masterful calligraphy.  They share an inherent trust of spirit which allows them to create art that unites, connects and celebrates humanity.

Mozart, Van Gogh, Lincoln, Gandhi, Emily Dickinson, you and I are connected.
Let's all climb Century Mountain.

Huang Xiang is one of the greatest poets of 20th century China and a master calligrapher.  Huang Xiang spent over twelve years in Chinese prisons and endured much hardship for writing his lyrical, free-spirited poetry and for his advocacy of human rights in China.  His inspiring story has been the subject of an award winning PBS documentary and his heroic pursuit for freedom and democracy in China has been documented in the book, 'Coming Alive; China After Mao' .  After eleven years, Huang Xiang returned to China to visit family and friends in April, 2008.  He has been described as a 'poet on fire' a human torch who burns as a lamp of freedom and enlightenment.  Huang Xiang's poetry and calligraphy is internationally recognized and he has performed for crowds numbering in the thousands.  To read his works, to experience his poetry performance, to see his calligraphy and to hear of his personal journey leaves no doubt he is an authentic master.  Huang Xiang says the art he creates with William Rock, "is highly creative and is something that has not been done before."  Fifteen of his books have been published in several languages.  Huang Xiang's mission today is to use his art to build a bridge between East and West and to promote a universal humanity. After completing a residency with the City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, Huang Xiang and his wife, the writer, Zhang Ling, live in New York City.

William Rock
is both a citizen of Ireland and the U.S.  He studied drawing at The California Art Institute and taught himself to paint and sculpt by travelling to museums around the world.  He has been immersed in Eastern thought and practice for fifteen years, studying and teaching with Tibetan and Chinese monks.  In 2006 his 'transcendent' paintings inspired a month long arts celebration held in Pittsburgh entitled 'Spirit Unfolding'.  William Rock's art has been displayed in museums in California and Pennsylvania and he has taught and spoken extensively on the nature of creativity, mysticism and art.  He has been instrumental in producing several cultural events that promote and embrace art as a connective dialogue for humanity.
